Marketing with Purpose: Your 2026 Playbook

Happy New Year, nonprofit leaders!

After gala season, holiday campaigns, and year-end fundraising, we hope you’ve had a moment to breathe. As you look toward the first quarter of 2026, you might be feeling excited, overwhelmed or both.

Here are a few simple marketing resolutions to help you make a bigger impact this year without burning out.

1. Prioritize Community Ownership

Your donors aren’t ATMs. Your volunteers aren’t just extra hands.

They’re the reason your work is possible.

Invite donors and volunteers to share why they support your mission and position them as leaders in the change you’re creating together. Language matters here: words like community, partnership, local and shared goals help supporters see themselves as essential to your mission.

Explain the need, but also remind people that they have something meaningful to contribute. When supporters see they’re part of a collective effort, the impact feels achievable.

2. Prioritize Real Storytelling

Polished videos have their place, especially at galas and events. But on social media? Authenticity wins.

Short, casual videos often perform better than highly produced ones. Why? Because they feel real. When content looks too “perfect,” people assume they’re being sold to and often keep scrolling.

Instead, share your story through:

  • Staff, volunteers, donors, or board members
  • Behind-the-scenes moments
  • A day in the life of your work
  • Donation unboxings or supply deliveries

These don’t have to be perfect. They just need to be honest. Real stories help supporters see where they fit and how they can help.

3. Prioritize Recurring Donors

Recurring donors are the backbone of a healthy nonprofit, but they don’t just happen.

Show supporters why monthly giving matters:

  • What does $10, $25 or $100 a month actually do?
  • What project did consistent giving make possible?
  • Who did it help specifically?

Use social media to paint that picture with real photos and videos. Use email to personally invite one-time or former donors to take the next step. Sending emails from a real team member (not a generic inbox) can make a big difference!

They already believe in your mission. Your job is to show them how ongoing support creates lasting impact.
